Residents of Regal Heights were among citizens honoured Thursday night at the Davenport Canada 150 Leadership Awards.
Four of the 16 awards presented by Davenport MP Julie Dzerowicz went to people from the neighbourhood: Florence Watts, Margaret Smith, Dave Meslin and John Keating. All are active members of the Regal Heights Residents’ Association.
The federal government created the Canada 150 Award as part of the country’s sesquicentennial. It recognizes “extraordinary leadership and contribution” to the community. While Margaret, Dave and John were on hand to receive their awards in person, Florence was unable to attend.
Social justice advocate and former Liberal MP Jean Augustine made the keynote address. She urged Canadians to contribute to their communities, noting that only by working together can we create the kind of country we want.
Congratulations to all the winners!
